The Wechsler tests are the most commonly used IQ-tests in Norway today. WP1 deals with recent and ongoing processes of translating, adapting and applying Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) and other Wechsler-tests.

The aim of this work package is to trace the use and development of intelligence tests in Norway over the 20th century.

This workpackage explores two main topics, IQ and eugenics and IQ and criminal law, and deals specifically with the role of IQ testing in the definition and handling of people diagnosed as intellectually disabled.

While serving partly as an instrument for segregating “underachievers”, psychometrics in education has been closely related to pedagogical progressivism, a focus of which was to liberate the curriculum from the cultural tradition and adapt it to the individual student’s abilities and interests. This work package takes this ambiguity as its starting point.

This WP will synthesize insights from the whole project, as seen through a transnational and comparative lens. This lens will be developed through the investigation of the transatlantic and Nordic contexts of intelligence testing in Norway.
