Slideshow: Professor Holtedahl’s expedition to Novaya Zemlya 1921
In 1919, Olaf Holtedahl, professor of geology at the University of Oslo, proposed a Norwegian multi-disciplinary scientific expedition to Novaya Zemlya.
It took two years to obtain funding for the expedition and the necessary permits from the Soviet authorities. Due to the civil war after the Russian Revolution, it was difficult to get in contact with the Soviet authorities, but Holtedahl succeeded with assistance from Fridtjof Nansen and the head office of the Norwegian Labour Party.
